Parks in Central Park, Denver, CO: what the MCA runs and what the city runs
Central Park, Denver, CO has two sets of parks with two different managers. The Master Community Association (MCA) runs the pocket parks, sport fields, splash pads and greens. The City and County of Denver runs the big city park, the greenway and Fred Thomas Park. Knowing which is which tells you who to call and how to reserve.
- The MCA manages over 20 pocket parks, five sport fields, picnic areas and four community splash pads
- The MCA does not manage the city park, the greenway or Fred Thomas Park; Denver does
- MCA splash pads normally run mid May to mid September, so they are closed now
- Parks and facility reservations are required for private events and exclusive use
If you are choosing a village, the park next door matters. It also helps to know who manages it, because that decides who you ask about a reservation, a repair or a question. Here is the split, using the Master Community Association (MCA) parks page and its guidance for the city-run parks.
What the MCA runs
The MCA says it manages a variety of parks in the community, each with different amenities. Some have hardscapes and pergolas, others have barbecues and play structures.
- Pocket parks. Over 20 smaller parks, good for small groups, family get-togethers and birthday parties. The MCA says they have no water, electricity or restroom facilities.
- Sport fields. Five multi-use fields at Aviator East and West, Puddle Jumper West, F-15, Jet Stream, Runway 35 and F54, used for things like lacrosse and soccer. Reservations are required for coaching sessions, selling goods or services, organized team play and exclusive use. The fields have access to portable toilets.
- Picnic areas. Located within the larger parks, with one or two picnic tables and a grill. Reservations or permits are required for exclusive use.
- Community splash pads. Four splash pads, at West Crescent, Conservatory Green Plaza, Buffalo Wallow and Beeler Park. They normally run from mid May to mid September, so they are closed for the season.
- Founders’ Green. On 29th Avenue between Roslyn and Syracuse, at the heart of East 29th Ave.
- Conservatory Green. At 49th Place between Valencia Court and Valencia Street, available for larger corporate and community event rentals. See the Conservatory Green guide.
What the city runs
The MCA states plainly that it does not manage the large city park, the greenway or Fred Thomas Park. The MCA points readers to the City and County of Denver (denvergov.org or 3-1-1) for those parks. That covers the large city park (the Central Park North guide has more on it) and the greenway trails. Separately, Bluff Lake shares its name with the Bluff Lake Nature Center, which has its own rules and hours on its visiting page.
How to use this when you are house hunting
- Visit in more than one season. Splash pads and pools are closed now, so a November visit shows you the park, not the summer programming. Go back in spring to see it in use.
- Ask who owns the park behind the house. An MCA pocket park and a city park have different managers and different reservation rules. Your agent or the MCA can tell you which is which for a specific address.
- Check events. The MCA calendar lists Winter Welcome on Nov 20 at the 29th Ave Town Center, with tree lighting at 6 PM.
